Portable Lighting
How can I improve the look and quality of my photos drastically?
One of those really expensive lenses or a "pro" camera
body? How about taking control over the lighting? You will
see the most dramatic change with good lighting. The good
news is that it does not need to cost you an arm or a leg.
In fact for less than the cost of a cheap DSLR body you can have
a multi light set up that will give very professional results
if used properly. While it is nice having the expensive
studio gear, even cheap battery flashes can provide controlled
light that you can use to enhance shape, form, texture, and add
a 3d like effect. You can even simulate many light set
ups as used by top commercial photographers for beauty and fashion.
As an added bonus you can take them anywhere. A camera
flash such as the Nikon SB28, SB80 etc are ideal because they
let you control the output manually, but all that proprietry
TTL wizardry makes them expensive. In reality a simple
reliable unit like the Vivitar 285HV is just
as good for off camera lighting, and less than $115!!.
It has a controllable output and can be connected to any camera
by cable, optical or radio slave. Other than that a few
inexpensive stands and adaptors are all you need for your lightweight
go anywhere studio lighting setup.

  Calumet Swivel Umbrella
